Ask Dr. Casey

Question: Dr. Casey I have noticed some bleeding when I brush my teeth, should I be concerned?

One of the most undiagnosed diseases affecting us today is gum (periodontal) disease. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, eighty percent of adults have some form of the disease, many without realizing it. Often, it is a silent condition that can result in infection and tooth loss, before it is diagnosed. There have been a number of studies that have linked the bacteria that cause gum disease with heart disease. Signs of this condition include bleeding when brushing or flossing, bad breath and receding gums. It is also something that you can inherit from your parents.

At Casey Family Dentistry, the periodontal health of our patients is one of our primary focuses. It is important to recognize the signs of gum disease early and treat it before it becomes a larger issue. We view Periodontal Treatment as a partnership between us and our patients. Our office had been recognized as a leader in Arestin antibiotic therapy. Both doctors are certified in the use of laser as an adjunct to treatment. Of equal importance is the role the patient plays in the this process. We make extraordinary efforts in patient education so they understand what is going on in their mouths and how they can best help themselves with their home care. Our goal is to treat the disease in its earliest stages and arrest its growth before it becomes a greater issue.
